Gastric Bypass
Before and After
How will you prepare for a
Gastric Bypass surgery?
Medical
Exam: First, the surgeon examines the patient to determine whether
he/she is a candidate for a Gastric Bypass Surgery. This preoperative examination
includes lab tests, among others.
All
health problems should be reported to the surgeon. It is of great importance
that illnesses such as hypertension, diabetes, and other health issues
are well controlled before the surgery is performed. Possible or actual
pregnancies must be reported as well. The patient needs to inform the
surgeon of all medications (including over-the-counter medications,
vitamins, herbs, etc) he/she is taking. The patient will then be informed
which medications should be discontinued before the surgery, as well
as when they should be discontinued.
Nutritional
counseling: Our dietitian will counsel our patients on healthy nutrition
habits before and after the surgery. Having good nutrition habits not
only supports weight loss but also helps to maintain ideal body weight.
Emotional
support: Our psychologists will determine the emotional status of
the patients and help them to prepare emotionally for the surgery and
the time thereafter.
The
night before the surgery: The patient will be asked not to eat or
drink anything for 12 hours immediately before the surgery.
What to expect after a Gastric
Bypass surgery:
Gastric
Bypass patients will stay in the hospital for 2-3 days. On the first
day of the surgery the patient will be asked to sit in a chair for a
while and to walk short distances. Remember that mobilization helps
to prevent blood clots from forming. (see Gastric Bypass complications for more information )
For
a few days the patient will have a nasogastric tube (tube inserted through
the nose to the stomach) which drains the pouch (the newly created stomach)
from any fluids. Another tube may be placed in the bypassed part of
the stomach to drain fluids. After a couple of days the patient should
be able to tolerate clear liquids and pureed foods and will then be
discharged from the hospital.
Expected
weight loss after surgery: The more the patient adheres to the proper diet (Read Gastric Bypass Diet for more information ) the more weight
he/she will lose. Within 2 years, one half or more of the extra weight
will be lost.
Other
benefits: Gastric Bypass
surgery helps the patient to lose weight, and as a result, other illnesses,
such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, and gastroesophageal
reflux disease (GERD) will be much improved.
