Gastric Bypass (Roux-en-Y)
During Gastric
Bypass surgery (also known as Roux-en-Y), surgeons reduce the size
of the stomach, using staples. This creates a small pouch at the upper
part of the stomach. A Y-shaped section of the jejunum (distal part
of the small intestine) is attached to the pouch, bypassing the duodenum
(proximal part of the small intestine).
A Gastric Bypass works
in two ways: The small stomach, able to hold only 15 to 30 milliliters,
restricts the patient from eating large portions (see Gastric Bypass Diet); also, bypassing a
large portion of the stomach and part of the small intestine results
in decreased food absorption. Both of these mechanisms result in weight
loss.
Gastric Bypass surgery
is the best option of treatment for type 2 diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome
(obesity, insulin resistance, hyperlipidemia, and hypertension). Treating
type 2 diabetes in obese patients early on with Gastric Bypass
surgery slows down the progression thereof. In many cases it even cures
type 2 diabetes.
