The Cure of Marisol’s Diabetes

Family History of Obesity and Diabetes
•  Marisol, a 33 year old female, diagnosed with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus.
•  Father: obese; died at the age of 44 in a car accident.
•  Mother: dies at the age of 43 from complications of diabetes and arterial hypertension.
•  Brother: overweight; diabetic.
•  Sister: obese.

Personal Pathological History
•  Diagnosed 7 years ago with type 2 diabetes; treated with Glucovance.
•  Insulin-dependent.
•  Suffers from exogenous obesity since 9 years.
•  Morning headaches.
•  Sleep disturbances.
•  Chronic lumbar pain.
•  Edema in hands and feet.
•  UDepression (chronic use of antidepressants—Wellbutrin).
•  Gastroesophageal Reflux disease.
•  Unsuccessful at losing weight by dieting and by taking weight-loss medications.
•  Suicidal thoughts due to depression.
•  Pulmonary restriction with moderate to severe aerobic incapacity.
•  Unable to do a stress test because of breathing difficulties.

Preoperative Assessment
•  Family history of diabetes and obesity.
•  Insulin-dependent.
•  Moderate to severe restrictive lung disease.
•  History of depression, diabetes, and pathological obesity.
•  Moderate surgical risk

Marisol, the day of her Gastric Bypass surgery


After Gastric Bypass Surgery
•  Able to discontinue insulin immediately after surgery.
•  Did well after surgery and was discharged from the hospital on the sixth day.
•  Left hospital without having to take oral hypoglycemics or insulin.
•  Does not present Dumping Syndrome nor rejection of surgery.
•  Lost 103.6 pounds (47 kilograms) within one year.

Controlled nutrition Does not need to be on a special diet
Blood sugar: 200 to 300 without taking insulin NORMAL blood sugars without taking insulin
